The airport receives a high volume of tourists each year, with an estimated 5.8 million seats on flights that arrived into the airport in 2021. Construction on the new terminal started on August 29th, 2022, and is estimated to be completed in October 2024. The construction project will occur in two stages, with the first one concluding in 2024 and the 2nd stage to be built later between the years 2025 and 2029. Puerto Vallarta Airport Info
Currently, the layout of the Puerto Vallarta airport is inefficient because frequently dozens of flights arrive within just a few short hours. At that time, the airport becomes saturated with travelers which often results in long lines and delays for passengers making their way through immigration, customs, and baggage claim. Experts estimate that tourism and visitors arriving by plane to Puerto Vallarta will increase in the coming years. As a result, the airport’s expansion is a great way to improve the experience for visitors arriving into Puerto Vallarta. The new terminal is estimated to cost 7 billion pesos and will double the arrival capacity. The addition of terminal 2 will add several new boarding gates. As a result, waiting areas will be less crowded and departure gate changes should decrease. Right now, travelers flying out of Puerto Vallarta can have their gate changed instantly without prior notification which can be confusing.
PVR New Terminal Facts
The new terminal will be 68,000 square meters, which translates to a growth of 150 percent in size. Once complete, the airport will be better equipped to receive 10-12 million arrivals each year. In addition, 11 to 19 boarding gates will be added as well 9 to 16 remote boarding gates. As a result, passengers will have more space which should make their trip more enjoyable. In addition, the new building will have a redesigned customs and immigration process to provide a more efficient travel experience. For example, 58 documentation counters will be added, and security filters will increase from 8 to 18 lines. Likewise, migration modules will also be increased to 30. In addition, state-of-the-art technology will be implemented so luggage can be scanned before travelers arrive. This will eliminate the need for travelers to carry their luggage through customs. Similarly, facial recognition readers will also be added.
The First Zero Energy Airport Terminal in Latin America
Another one of the most exciting things about the airport’s new terminal is that it will be the first Zero Energy Airport (NET Zero certification) in Latin America. This means that the airport will utilize standards that reduce carbon dioxide emissions and pollutants to absorb as much carbon emissions as are emitted. This technology will be achieved within 7.5 years through various stages which include the addition of solar panels on the airport roof which will lower energy consumption by 40 percent. In addition, efficient water management processes that reuse 100 percent of the gray, black and blue water generated inside and outside the terminal will be added. This will help reduce water consumption by 35 percent. In addition, geothermal batteries and architectural design that reduces the use of air conditioning will be added. Leading the way in sustainability, the PVR airport also plans to include hanging and potted plants throughout the entire building. The plants will create a lush, tropical ambiance and also naturally absorb carbon dioxide as a part of the photosynthesis process.
As you can see, many exciting and innovative changes are happening at the Puerto Vallarta airport. Once terminal 2 is completed, the 68,000 square meter space will provide plenty of new space for more shops, restaurants, bars, and lounges. In addition, the outside of the airport will be renovated with planned improvements for the runway, platforms, streets, roads, parking lot, and control tower. Are you ready to visit Puerto Vallarta for a relaxing vacation? Thanks to a great climate, rich culture, and tons of activities to enjoy all year long, it’s always a great time to visit Puerto Vallarta.
